- Black lava blends into a beautiful sandy beach on Oahu, Hawaii. There are
some black sand beaches but they're hard to get to and aren't very big. The
typical beach is regular sand and is protected by a reef that keeps the big
swells offshore. The snorkeling is terrific inside the reef and there's plenty
of areas for surfing. The islands are predominantly green, either from natural
vegetation or from the crops of sugar cane or pineapple.
