The weather was clouding up so I moved inland to Castroville, the artichoke center of the world, to spend the night.  They take their artichokes very seriously here.  You can attend the Artichoke Festival on September 27th and 28th and learn everything there is to know about artichokes.

A short way north on Highway 101 is San Juan Bautista.  There is a beautiful mission here that was founded in 1797.  This was the 15th of the 21 missions in Alta California.  This is the widest of all the mission churches with three naves or aisles.  There is a special cat door carved into the rear door of the mission to allow the cats access at all times to catch mice.  Mice were a serious problem in the 1800, eating much of the harvest.  In 1847 once of the storerooms became the temporary home for the Breen family, survivors of the Donner Party tragedy.
I took 101 to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.  The weather was lousy but the bridge was beautiful anyway.  I stopped at the scenic vista on both sides to shoot some pictures and just as I got to the north side, it started to rain.  The crowds scrambled for their cars but I was pretty comfortable in my waterproof Aerostich suit.  The photo of Alcatraz is hard to see because of the rain.  The dark smudge in the center of the water is The Rock.
